This design matches the intense and sometimes uncomfortable nature of the play, looking both angular and fragile, sterile yet dirty, and uninhabited but intimate.Vincent River, the art loving absent character killed in a homophobic attack, is represented on stage through the design by referencing art by queer artists that the character perhaps would have known, such as Francis Bacon’s ‘Study of a Nude’ and Felix Gonzales-Torres’ ‘Untitled (Loverboy)’. These artists explore themes of grief, life, love, desire and hate much like the play itself.
